Fees, getting started and how to begin

How much does counselling cost at Solis Insight?

A first individual session is 90 minutes and costs RM280. Follow-up individual sessions are 60 minutes at RM250. A three-session package is RM660 and a five-session package is RM1,000. Couples sessions are RM380 per couple. A complimentary enquiry call is available before you commit to anything. The first session is longer because it covers intake, background and an initial understanding of what you are bringing. Group counselling series start from RM550 per person. Coaching is priced separately, from RM220 for a Life Redesign Coaching session. Public workshops start from RM118 per person, and corporate talks from RM1,800. See the full fee list.

What happens in a first counselling session?

The first session lasts 90 minutes. It begins with an explanation of confidentiality and its limits, then moves into your reasons for coming, relevant background, and what you would like to be different. You are not expected to have everything worked out beforehand. Nothing is decided for you in that session. Towards the end, we discuss whether counselling is a suitable fit, roughly how many sessions might be useful, and what a reasonable next step looks like. If a different form of support would serve you better, that will be said plainly.

Do I need a doctor's referral before booking?

No referral is needed. You can contact Solis Insight directly by WhatsApp or email to arrange a first session. Counselling in Malaysia is not gatekept by a medical referral, and you do not need a diagnosis to book.

I am not sure whether I need counselling or coaching. What should I choose?

You do not have to decide before contacting us. Counselling is a professional service for exploring personal concerns, emotional experiences, relationships, stress and life challenges. Coaching focuses on reflection, direction, priorities and practical planning. A brief enquiry can help clarify which option may be more suitable.

How do I begin?

For counselling, coaching or workshop interest, begin with a short WhatsApp enquiry above. For a corporate or HRD Corp programme, use the quotation form above or email shirley@solisinsight.my. Please avoid sending detailed sensitive personal information through a general enquiry channel.

Format, language and location

Do you offer counselling in Mandarin or Cantonese?

Yes. Sessions are available in English, Bahasa Malaysia, Mandarin and Cantonese. Tell us your preferred language when you first make contact, and the session will be conducted in that language throughout, including the intake and consent discussion. This matters more than it looks — emotional vocabulary is often clearest in a first language, and people frequently find they can describe something in Cantonese or Mandarin that felt flat in English. For family or couples sessions where members prefer different languages, that can be accommodated.

Can I attend online? Are in-person sessions available?

Yes to both. Online sessions require a private, safe location with a stable connection and are not suitable for every person or concern. In-person sessions are available at Wisma JAG, Taman Desa, Kuala Lumpur, by confirmed appointment only — walk-ins are not available.

Where is Solis Insight located?

Solis Insight is at No. 304, Level 3A, Wisma JAG, Jalan Desa Utama, Taman Desa, 58100 Kuala Lumpur. The counselling room is a quiet, private space, and the building is a short drive from Mid Valley, Seputeh and Old Klang Road.

Can workshops be delivered at our own office?

Yes. Corporate talks and workshops can be delivered at your premises anywhere in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, or at a venue you arrange. Content is adapted to your team's actual pressures rather than delivered as a fixed script.

Professional standards and confidentiality

What is the difference between a counsellor, a clinical psychologist and a psychiatrist in Malaysia?

A registered counsellor is licensed by Lembaga Kaunselor Malaysia and works through structured conversation with concerns such as stress, relationships, life transitions and emotional difficulty. A clinical psychologist conducts psychological assessment and treats diagnosed conditions. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can diagnose mental illness and prescribe medication. Counselling does not involve diagnosis or medication. Where a concern falls outside that scope, or where medical or psychiatric care is clearly more appropriate, a referral will be suggested rather than the work being stretched to fit.

How can I check that a counsellor is properly registered in Malaysia?

A registered counsellor in Malaysia holds a KB registration number issued by Lembaga Kaunselor Malaysia, and a counsellor in active practice also holds a valid practising certificate with a PA number. Both can be verified against the board's register. At Solis Insight, Shirley Chai is registered as KB13276 and holds practising certificate PA12931. Asking any counsellor for these numbers is a reasonable and normal question, and you are entitled to check them before booking.

Is what I share in a session kept confidential?

Yes. Counselling at Solis Insight is confidential, subject to the limits set out in the Counsellors Act 1998 and the code of ethics of Lembaga Kaunselor Malaysia. These limits are explained to you at the start of the first session, before you share anything substantive. The main exceptions are narrow and are the same across the profession: where there is a risk of serious harm to you or another person, where a child's safety is involved, or where disclosure is required by a court order. Outside those situations, what you share stays in the room.

May I message the counsellor between sessions, or record a session?

WhatsApp, email and text messages are mainly for appointments, payment confirmation and brief administrative communication — they do not replace a session, and an immediate response outside scheduled sessions may not be possible. No audio or video recording should be made unless both parties have given prior written consent.

Can Solis Insight prepare a report or speak to another party?

A report, letter or exchange of information requires a separate written request or consent, sufficient information and reasonable preparation time. A separate fee may apply, and a request may be declined if it falls outside the counsellor's role or professional responsibilities.

Is Solis Insight an emergency service?

No. Solis Insight does not provide 24-hour emergency or crisis support. In an immediate danger, medical emergency or safety crisis, call 999 or go to the nearest hospital emergency department.

Who this is for, and scope

Is Settling into Malaysia Counselling only for people from China?

No. The service is open to international students, working adults, entrepreneurs, expatriates, MM2H participants, long-stay residents and accompanying family members from any country — not only people from China. It places particular emphasis on Mandarin-friendly support for newcomers from China because language and cultural familiarity may make it easier to begin. Common themes include cultural adjustment, isolation, strain on a marriage or family after relocating, a trailing spouse losing professional identity, and the accumulated stress of navigating unfamiliar systems — these are ordinary responses to a large change, not a sign that something is wrong with you.

Can Solis Insight help with my visa, university, employment or business-registration problem?

Counselling can help you manage the emotional pressure, communication and decision-making around a practical problem. It does not provide immigration, visa, university-admission, legal, employment-law, tax, accounting or business-registration advice. Official or professional guidance should be obtained from the relevant institution or qualified adviser.

Is this an MM2H application or relocation-advisory service?

No. Solis Insight supports the emotional, relational and cultural-adjustment side of living in Malaysia. It does not prepare MM2H applications or provide visa, property, financial, tax, healthcare, investment or relocation advice. Please obtain those services from the relevant authority or appropriately qualified adviser.

What is Life Redesign Coaching?

It is a reflective personal-development service for people who want more clarity about direction, priorities, transitions or next steps. It is not counselling, psychotherapy or medical treatment.

Workshops and corporate / HRD Corp programmes

Can I arrange a private workshop, or corporate/HRD Corp training?

Yes to both. Private sessions may be discussed for communities, organisations, universities or invited groups; the final format and fee depend on the topic, duration, materials, venue and participant number. Solis Insight also offers customised talks, workplace workshops and structured programmes facilitated by Chai Sei Lei — HRD Corp programmes are promoted and facilitated by her, with registration and administration handled through the appointed registered training provider, confirmed directly during quotation.

Are your workplace programmes HRD Corp claimable?

Solis Insight programmes are facilitated by an HRD Corp Accredited Trainer, so employers registered with HRD Corp may be able to claim against their levy. Programme availability, quotation and any applicable HRD Corp registration or administration are confirmed for each engagement. Two one-day programmes are currently offered: anger and stress management with de-escalation skills for operational staff, and conflict resolution with distressed employee support for supervisors and team leaders. Both include a DASS-21 wellbeing self-check. Request a quotation with your headcount and preferred dates.

Are the corporate prices on the website HRD Corp programme prices?

No. The corporate talk and half-day workshop prices are starting references for ad-hoc customised programmes. HRD Corp programmes require a separate quotation.

What is the DASS-21 and why is it used in your programmes?

The DASS-21 is a 21-item self-report questionnaire measuring self-reported levels of depression, anxiety and stress. In Solis Insight workplace programmes it serves as a personal wellbeing self-check for each participant and as an aggregate picture for the organisation. It is a screening and awareness tool, not a clinical diagnosis. Individual responses are not reported back to the employer. Organisations receive group-level patterns only, which is what is actually useful for deciding where to direct support.
