A new country can feel exciting and unsettling at the same time.

Moving to Malaysia may open a new chapter in study, work, business, retirement or family life. It can also mean leaving familiar routines, relationships, language and ways of doing things behind.

Settling into Malaysia Counselling offers a confidential, Mandarin-friendly space for international newcomers and long-stay residents — with particular understanding for people arriving from China — to make sense of the adjustment and find steadier ways forward.

Who this service is for

  • International university, college, postgraduate and research students
  • Working adults and professionals who have relocated to Malaysia
  • Entrepreneurs and business owners establishing themselves in Malaysia
  • Expatriates and accompanying spouses, partners or family members
  • MM2H participants and accompanying family members
  • Long-stay residents or adults who have moved to join family in Malaysia

The service is open to newcomers and long-stay residents from any country. The China-focused positioning reflects Shirley's language ability and familiarity with the concerns commonly raised by Mandarin-speaking clients; it does not assume that every person from China has the same experience.

A culturally respectful, Mandarin-friendly space

Sessions may be conducted in Mandarin or English, with Cantonese or Bahasa Malaysia available where suitable. Shirley will not assume that language, nationality or cultural background tells the whole story. Each person's family, region, education, work and migration experience is different.

For clients unfamiliar with counselling, the first session will also explain confidentiality, professional boundaries and what counselling may realistically involve in Malaysia.

What this service does not provide

Newcomer counselling does not provide immigration, visa, university-admission, legal, employment-law, tax, accounting, investment or business-registration advice. Practical concerns may be discussed for their emotional and decision-making impact, but official information should be obtained from the relevant institution or qualified professional.

Counselling is not psychiatric or medical treatment and does not guarantee a particular adjustment outcome. Where another form of support is more appropriate, a referral may be recommended.

Privacy and professional boundaries

Counselling information is confidential within recognised legal and professional limits. Solis Insight will not report personal counselling content to a university, employer, business partner, family member or other party without written consent unless disclosure is otherwise required or permitted by law or professional responsibility.

Where counselling may overlap with another professional role held by Shirley, the service may be declined or referred to avoid a conflict of interest or unclear professional roles.

Solis Insight is not a 24-hour emergency or crisis service. If there is immediate danger, a medical emergency or a safety crisis, call 999 or go to the nearest hospital emergency department.

You do not need to wait until everything becomes too much.

If life in Malaysia is not feeling the way you expected, you can begin by talking about what has been hardest to carry.
